Comic book concept pencil designs

My friend, Roland Tim Temmel (you can find him on facebook) wrote an epic tale of costumed heroes fighting to right the imbalance in the universe. The story has time travel, brave comradeship, a fantastic quest, and ultimate doppelganger action! This is a page from the introduction highlighting the technical versus evolutionary conflict that is present among the demigods in this tale.

Found setchbook Godzilla amendment

After the kids have gone fro school to their summer break, we clean out the lockers. I found this hard bound sketchbook with a few drawings and a 6th grader’s complaint about science being hard in it.

I’ve added a ball point pen sketch of Godzilla to his (very basic) cabin in the woods.

I skipped ahead in the lesson plan today . . . no , that’s not exactly right, I drew a couple of toons today. This is Torgo, the Master’s familiar from the El Paso area drive in movie “MANOS, the Hands of Fate!” He’s actually a satyr that the Master has enslaved. The concept is a lot better than the movie, a LOT better.

I’ll see you before Tuesday!

Missed yesterday because of computer problems, but after a couple of restarts, and a defrag my little laptop is humming again. So here we go.

I can see that I’m getting better even after a couple of days of setting time aside to concentrate on drawing a variety of combination of features, I started with simple faces as recommended in the lesson. Some just copy the simple examples and then expanding into the funny animal mugs in the style of Ub Iwerks.

Image

That was fun, you can see where I started to have my little faces look up. Then I moved on into ladies faces and tried some caricature again.

Image

Brother Mitt still looks like Jay Leno. I haven’t gotten past the chin as Mitt’s defining characteristic and that’s the problem. >sigh< Laughing guy and the perky lady came out pretty good though. The ability I am trying to develop is to make every drawing match the emotion I have set out to illustrate, not just scattershoot until something fits.

I watch Svengoolie’s monster features and I’m subscribe to his facebook page. Since his character makeup is stylized to begin with, his likeness wasn’t hard to recreate. That’s a typical Sven response to a comic sound clip.

I’m on my way to becoming the cartoonist I’ve always wanted to be! HUZZAH!

So, here’s some practice cartoon faces that were mostly caricatured from google images.

Image

Sorry about the mixed up placement of the images, it is a scan of the whole page.

Image

One of the cool things about my scanner is its ‘mirror’ function. I was uncomfortable with the face on the left and didn’t know what the worry was until I flipped the image. That’s when I saw that the mouth is out of place in relation to the other features. I am going to be more careful to plot out symmetry in the facial features.

Image

That tall kid on the upper left is the restricted way I usually draw people, the others are the freer cartooning style I am trying to develop. They are a lot more fun to look at, yes?

Image

That guy on the lower right is a likeness of Missouri Representative Todd Akin who this week announce that he believes that women have the power to deny the implantation of a fertilized egg after they have been raped

-sigh –

So, I’m trying some caricature. The Presidential Candidates were a seemingly exciting choice and I nailed Barrack Obama on the first try. Mitt Romney . . . eh . . . not so much.

See? I can’t seem to get the broadness of his face in the first one and the second is starting to look like Dreamworks’ Metro Man. Sheesh!

So here’s the last one, Mitt and Ann Romney. It’s an okay drawing that misses the target. The basic structure is atilt and Ann looks too mean. I’m kinda tired and need some supper. Tomorrow, I’ll just doodle some random faces from the web. It’ll be more fun not to go for a likeness and just go for exaggeration and humor.

Bye for now!
